how do people change?

In the novel The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck, the main character Wang Lung starts off as a modest and simple man who lives off the land.


(green caterpillar was used to symbolize humbleness and ability to live off the land)

As the book progresses, he drops his moral values for the evil of riches. When he thinks that his family will become great and large


Wang Lung’s family really becomes an ugly, confusing, dishonest mess.


(red-hot peppers were used to symbolize evil)

and unfortunately there is no happy ending.
